Community & Social

MTG Codex has a small set of community features for connecting with other users — sending messages, commenting on decks, and signaling trade interest. They're entirely optional and entirely opt-in.

Eligibility

To use any community feature, your account needs two things:

Both are toggled on the Profile page. Until both are in place, you'll see a gate message anywhere a community feature would normally appear, pointing you back to your profile to finish setup. This is so anyone you interact with can actually see who you are — there's no anonymous messaging, no anonymous comments. The display name shown to other users is whatever you've set; you can change it any time.

Direct Messages

The Messages page (envelope icon in the sidebar) is your DM inbox. Each row is a conversation thread showing the other user's name, the most recent message timestamp, and an unread badge if there's anything you haven't seen. Click into a thread to read the full history.

To start a new message, visit any public profile and click the message icon. A composer modal opens where you can type a message (up to 5,000 characters) and optionally attach a card from your collection, tradelist, or wishlist as context — useful when you're reaching out about a specific trade.

Inside a thread, your messages appear on the right, theirs on the left. Older messages load when you scroll up. You can delete any message you sent. Both parties get a notification when a new message arrives.

Notifications

The bell icon in the sidebar shows a badge with your unread notification count. Click it to open a dropdown with your 20 most recent notifications. Click a notification to jump to whatever it's about; click "Mark all read" to clear the badge.

There are four notification types:

The full /notifications page shows your complete history with pagination, and lets you mark individual entries as read.

Deck Comments

Every public deck has a comments section at the bottom. Eligible users can leave a comment, and the deck's owner gets a notification.

The deck owner has an "Author" badge next to their name on their own deck. You can edit or delete your own comments any time. The deck owner can delete any comment on their deck (their deck, their rules). And anyone can flag a comment for moderator review if it's harassing, off-topic, or otherwise breaks the rules.

Trade Interest

When you're browsing someone else's tradelist or public collection and see a card you want, the "I'm Interested" button signals that to the owner. Clicking it sends them a notification with your name and the card. The button toggles to an "Interested" state in green to confirm.

It's not a binding offer or a chat message — it's just a way to say "hey, this caught my eye, want to talk?" There's a 5-minute cooldown per card per user to prevent spam. The button is hidden on your own cards, and you can withdraw your interest later (which sends a withdrawal notification so the owner knows it's no longer active).

Blocking Someone

If someone's bothering you, there's a Block button on their profile. Blocking cuts the connection both ways — no messages, no trade interest, nothing. You can unblock later from the same place if you change your mind.

You don't owe anyone an explanation for using it, and nobody is told they've been blocked.

Discord

A Discord link appears in the sidebar (and in the mobile drawer). It opens an invite to the MTG Codex community server in a new tab — a good place to ask questions, suggest features, report bugs, or just chat with other users. There's a Ko-fi link next to it if you'd like to help cover the server bill; it's entirely optional and nothing in the app is locked behind it.

A Note on Moderation

Comments and messages are user-generated content. Don't post anything you wouldn't want a stranger to read out loud. Flagged comments go to a moderator queue for review and can be removed or dismissed by an admin. Be respectful — that's the rule, and it's enforced.
